City Pages: Rank in Each Area Without Doorway Pages

A business that serves several cities usually wants to appear when someone searches "travel agent in Noida" as well as "travel agent in Delhi". The common shortcut is to copy one page twenty times and swap the city name. It is quick, it looks like SEO, and it is one of the patterns Google's spam policies name directly: doorway pages, created to rank for variations of a search rather than to help anyone.

City pages can work. They work when each one says something true and useful about serving that place, and they fail when they are the same page in a different hat.

What makes a city page a doorway page

The test is whether the page would be useful to a visitor if search engines did not exist. A page that repeats the homepage with "Gurgaon" substituted for "Delhi" gives a Gurgaon customer nothing they would not get from the main service page. Twenty of those, linked from a footer full of city names, is the shape Google's systems are built to recognise and discount. At best the pages are ignored; at worst they drag down how the whole site is judged.

What a useful city page contains

  • How you actually serve that place: do customers visit an office there, do you come to them, or is it entirely by phone and WhatsApp?
  • Local specifics that matter to the service: the nearest airport and its common routes, typical travel patterns from that area, documents or offices a resident there deals with
  • Real proof from that area: reviews from customers there (with permission), a photo of the office if one exists, the team member who handles it
  • Answers to the questions people from that area actually ask, from your lead sheet and messages
  • Clear contact details and the hours someone answers

If you cannot write five genuinely different things about a city, you probably do not need a page for it. A single strong service page that mentions the areas you cover often outranks a thin page per city.

Fewer, better pages

Start with the two or three areas that already send you the most customers, according to the lead sheet. Build those pages properly, link to them from the relevant service pages with natural anchor text, as the internal links article described, and watch them in Search Console for two or three months. Add more cities only when the first ones earn impressions and enquiries.

Keep each city page consistent with your Business Profile. If the profile is a service-area business, the city pages should describe serving those areas, not imply an office you do not have there.

What not to do

Do not create city pages for places you do not serve. Do not stuff the city name into every sentence. Do not hide lists of city links in the footer. And do not invent local addresses or phone numbers to look present; a false local presence is worse than none, and it contradicts the profile Google already knows.

FAQ

Can I use the same template for every city page?

A shared layout is fine. A shared text with the city name swapped is not. Keep the structure consistent, and make the content of each section specific to that place.

Do city pages help me rank on Google Maps?

Maps rankings come mainly from the Business Profile and its distance to the searcher, not from website pages. City pages help organic search results and give people who land there a reason to trust you, which supports enquiries from those areas.

How long should a city page be?

As long as it needs to be useful, which is often shorter than people expect. A focused page with real local detail, proof and clear contact options does better than a long page padded with the city name.
