Click-to-WhatsApp Ads: Meta Leads That Actually Reply

Lead forms have a dirty secret: filling one is easy, which is exactly why so many of the leads go cold. Someone taps, autofill does the work, they forget you existed. Then your team calls an unknown number two hours later and nobody picks up.

Click-to-WhatsApp ads flip that. Instead of collecting a phone number to chase, the ad opens a WhatsApp chat with your business, and the lead sends the first message themselves. For businesses selling services in India and to Indian audiences abroad, where WhatsApp is where conversations already happen, this format routinely produces fewer leads than forms but far more actual conversations. Here's how to run it properly.

Why the first message changes everything

A form lead gave you permission to interrupt them. A WhatsApp lead started the conversation. That difference shows up everywhere downstream: they see your reply in an app they open fifty times a day, your number is now in their chat list instead of appearing as an unknown caller, and the whole exchange has the texture of a chat, no hold music, no awkward cold-call opening.

The trade-off is honest work: someone has to actually chat. If nobody on your team can answer WhatsApp within a few minutes during business hours, fix that first or this format will burn budget the same way slow calling burns form leads.

Setting the campaign up right

Use the Engagement objective with WhatsApp as the conversion location, or Sales with WhatsApp for catalogue-style businesses. Connect your WhatsApp Business number to the Facebook Page before you build the campaign; Ads Manager will walk you through it once.

Write the ad about one specific problem, the same rule as any service ad. "Name misspelled on your ticket? WhatsApp us, most corrections done same day" beats "We are a full-service travel agency" every single time. The person should know exactly what to say when the chat opens.

Set a pre-filled greeting so the lead's first tap sends something useful: "Hi, I need help with a flight name correction." That one line saves the awkward "Hi" / "Hello, how can we help?" round-trip and tells your team which service the lead wants before anyone types.

Add quick-reply questions in your WhatsApp Business settings for the three things you always ask (travel date, booking reference, route). The faster the lead answers those, the faster you can quote.

The first five minutes decide the conversation

WhatsApp leads expect chat-speed replies. A response inside five minutes keeps the conversation alive; a reply after three hours usually gets silence, the same decay curve as calling form leads late. Three habits keep it fast:

  • One person owns WhatsApp during business hours, by name, per shift. "Everyone watches it" means nobody does.
  • An away message outside hours that sets a real expectation: "We're back at 9 AM and will reply first thing."
  • Saved replies for the five questions you get daily (pricing, timing, documents needed). Personalise the first line, paste the rest.

Judge it on conversations, not cost per lead

In Ads Manager the metric to watch is cost per conversation started, but the number that decides whether you scale is further down: how many conversations turned into quotes, and how many quotes turned into bookings. Keep that count in the same one-sheet tracker you use for calls. A typical honest comparison after a few weeks looks like this: form leads arrive cheaper per lead, WhatsApp leads cost more per lead but convert to conversations at three or four times the rate, and cost per actual booking lands lower on WhatsApp. Your numbers will differ; the point is to compare at the booking level, never the lead level.

Three mistakes that sink this format

Treating it like a call list. Replying to a WhatsApp message with "what's your number, we'll call you" defeats the reason the person chose chat. Quote in the chat; move to a call only when they ask or the details get complex.

Broadcasting to old chats. Blasting promotions to everyone who ever messaged you gets your number reported and can get your WhatsApp Business account restricted. Message people about their own enquiry; use the opt-in broadcast list for the rest.

No record of outcomes. Chats scroll away. Without a tracker row per lead (date, service asked, quoted, booked), you'll never know whether the campaign makes money, and you'll scale or kill it on a feeling.

FAQ

Should I stop running lead forms entirely?

Run both for a month and compare cost per booking. Forms still win for audiences that don't use WhatsApp heavily, and some people prefer a form's low commitment. Many businesses land on WhatsApp for hot service enquiries and forms for slower, bigger decisions.

Do I need the WhatsApp Business API or is the free app enough?

The free WhatsApp Business app is enough to start and for most small teams. The paid API matters when several agents need to share one number with proper routing, or you want automated flows. Don't pay for the API to solve a problem you don't have yet.

What budget does it take to test this properly?

Enough to buy roughly 30 to 50 conversations, judged over two to three weeks. Below that you're reading noise. If your cost per conversation runs high from day one, the ad's promise is usually too vague, fix the creative before touching the budget.
