Conversion Tracking: Teach Google Ads What a Customer Is

Ask a Google Ads account one question and you'll know if it can ever work: when a customer calls and books, does the account find out? In most small-business accounts the honest answer is no. Clicks get counted, money gets spent, and the moment that pays for everything, the call, the WhatsApp chat, the booking, happens somewhere Google can't see.

That blindness has a price beyond messy reports. Google's bidding now runs on machine learning: it looks at which clicks became customers and goes hunting for more people like them. Feed it nothing, and it optimises for clicks, any clicks, from anyone. Feed it real conversions, and every rupee of budget starts chasing the people who actually buy. Conversion tracking isn't admin work. It's the steering wheel.

Decide what a "conversion" means for you

Before touching settings, name the moments that mean money in your business. For a travel desk or call centre the list is usually short:

  • A phone call longer than a minute or two (long enough to be a real enquiry)
  • A WhatsApp conversation started
  • A form submitted
  • For some businesses: a booking completed on the site

Don't count page visits, button hovers, or "time on site" as conversions. If it wouldn't make you smile as the owner, it shouldn't teach the machine. Weak signals are worse than none, because Google will faithfully find you thousands more people who almost enquire.

Calls: track the ones that matter

Set up call reporting in Google Ads (it swaps your number for a forwarding number on ads and, with the site tag, on your website too), then set a minimum call length so a 10-second wrong number doesn't count as a win. Somewhere between 60 and 120 seconds fits most service businesses, below your average real enquiry, above the misdials.

If most of your calls come from the number printed on your website rather than the ad itself, the website call tracking matters more than the ad's call extension. Both come free with the account; most owners have switched on neither.

WhatsApp and forms: close the loop

A tap on your WhatsApp button is trackable as a conversion action on the site. A form gets a thank-you page, and the thank-you page view becomes the conversion, never the form page itself. These take an hour with Google Tag Manager or your web person, once, and they work forever.

The deeper win is offline conversion tracking: uploading which leads eventually became customers, so Google learns the difference between an enquiry and a sale. That's a step most small accounts never take, and it's genuinely optional at the start. Get the calls, chats and forms flowing first; graduate to offline uploads when volume justifies it.

Give the machine a fair diet, then let it work

Once real conversions flow in, two changes follow:

Switch bidding to a conversion-based strategy. Maximise Conversions (with a target cost per action once you know your numbers) instead of clicks. Expect a wobbly two or three weeks while the system relearns; judge it on the month, not the first Tuesday.

Read one number weekly: cost per conversion, by campaign. Not clicks, not CTR, not impression share. One campaign at ₹400 per enquiry and another at ₹1,900 for the same service is a budget decision made for you, and you'd never see it in a click report, where the expensive campaign often looks better.

The audit that takes five minutes

Open Google Ads and check three things. Goals, then Conversions: is anything listed, and is it something that means money? The Status column: does it say "Recording conversions", and is the count this month plausible against your actual enquiries? And the bidding strategy on each campaign: does it mention conversions, or clicks? If any answer disappoints you, that's not bad news, it's the cheapest improvement available in your account, because you already pay for every click either way.

FAQ

My conversion count looks higher than my real enquiries. Why?

Usual suspects: counting every call regardless of length, counting the form page instead of the thank-you page, counting one person twice across call and form, or a conversion action set to count "every" instead of "one" per click. Trim the definitions until the number matches reality; the machine is only as honest as the diet you feed it.

Is conversion tracking worth it on a small budget, say ₹20,000 a month?

Especially then. A big budget can survive waste; a small one can't. Even 15 to 20 conversions a month is enough signal for smart bidding to noticeably outperform manual clicks-chasing at the same spend.

Do I need a developer to set this up?

Call reporting and call extensions: no, it's all inside Google Ads. Website tags for WhatsApp clicks and thank-you pages: either an hour of a web person's time or a patient afternoon with Google Tag Manager's step-by-step setup. It's one-time work that then runs untouched for years.
