Schema Markup: What It Does for a Small Site, Honestly

A search engine reading your page sees words. It has to guess which of them is your business name, which is a phone number, which is an opening hour and which is a price. Structured data, usually called schema markup, removes the guessing: a small block of code that states these facts in a format machines read directly. It does not change how the page looks to a visitor at all.

It is also one of the most oversold topics in SEO. Plenty of guides promise stars and rich results for every page. The honest version is smaller and still worth an afternoon.

What it actually does for a small business site

Markup helps Google and other systems understand who you are, what each page is about, and how the pieces connect. For a local service business the main gain is accuracy: the right name, number, address and hours tied firmly to your site and your Business Profile, and articles clearly identified as articles with an author and a date. That clarity helps the AI answers the earlier article discussed, too: systems that quote sources prefer pages whose facts are stated plainly and consistently.

What it does not do is guarantee any visual enhancement in search results, and it is not a ranking lever by itself. Google decides what to display, and it has cut back several rich results in recent years. FAQ rich results, for example, are now shown mainly for well-known government and health sites, so adding FAQ markup to a service page will rarely produce the expandable questions it once did.

The markup worth adding

  • Organization or LocalBusiness on the homepage: name, logo, address, phone, hours, and links to your official profiles. Match the Business Profile exactly, character for character
  • Article on each blog post: headline, author, publish date and last-updated date, which also supports the refresh work from the content-refresh article
  • BreadcrumbList on inner pages, so the path to the page is clear to search engines
  • Service descriptions on service pages, kept simple and matching the visible text

Most website platforms and SEO plugins add some of this automatically. Check what you already have before writing anything by hand, because duplicate or conflicting markup is worse than none.

The rules that keep it safe

Markup must describe what is visible on the page. Marking up a price, an opening time or a review that the visitor cannot see is exactly what Google's spam policies target, and it can lose a site its rich results entirely. Two specific traps catch small businesses: review stars about your own business placed on your own site (not eligible for star snippets in search), and ratings copied from other platforms. Leave both out.

Checking it works

Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator both read a live page and report what they find, including errors. After adding markup, test the homepage, one service page and one article. Search Console then reports structured data it has found across the site under its enhancements section, with warnings when something breaks after a site change. A quarterly look is enough.

FAQ

Will schema markup improve my rankings?

Not directly. It helps search engines understand and present your pages accurately, which can improve how often people click, but it does not lift a page that would not otherwise rank. Treat it as clarity, not as a boost.

Is it worth adding FAQ markup any more?

The visible FAQ section on the page is still worth having for readers and for answer-style searches. The markup behind it is harmless and helps machines read the questions, but do not expect the expandable FAQ display in results for a small business site.

Do I need a developer to add it?

Often not. Many platforms and SEO plugins generate the basics, and a static site can take a small copied block per page type. A developer helps when the site is custom-built, but the content of the markup, your correct business details, is something only you can supply.
