No Shopfront? Set Up a Service-Area Business Profile Right
A lot of service businesses have no counter for customers to walk up to. The travel consultant who works from home and meets clients on WhatsApp, the call centre in an office customers never visit, the agent who goes to the customer instead of the other way round. Google calls these service-area businesses, and its rules for them are different from a shop's. Getting them wrong is one of the commonest reasons a perfectly genuine business ends up suspended or hard to find.
Shopfront, service area, or both
The question Google asks is simple: do customers come to your address during working hours, with someone there to serve them? If yes, show the address. If no, hide it and list the areas you serve instead. A hybrid business, with an office customers can visit and staff who also travel to customers, can show the address and add service areas too.
What does not qualify as a visible address: a home you do not receive customers at, a virtual office, a mail-forwarding address, or a co-working desk with no staffed presence during your hours. Showing one of these is the pattern that trips verification and leads to suspensions, and the vanished-from-Maps article covered how slow those are to undo.
Setting the service areas
You can list up to twenty areas as cities, districts or postal codes. Google's guidance is that they should not reach farther than about two hours' drive from where the business is based. Two practical points matter more than the maximum.
First, list where your customers actually come from, not everywhere you would like to work. The lead sheet's source column tells you. Second, service areas describe where you work; they are not a ranking switch. Listing a distant city does not make you appear there. Ranking still leans heavily on where the business is actually based, which is why a home-based consultant often ranks well near home and weakly across town, whatever the list says.
What to do instead of an address
A hidden address removes one of the main trust signals, so the rest of the profile has to work harder. The parts the earlier articles covered carry more weight here: a full service list in the words customers use, a description that says plainly how you work ("consultations by phone, WhatsApp or video; we visit customers in South Delhi and Gurgaon"), real photos of the person or team rather than a building, steady reviews, and a phone number that is answered. Add the website with a contact page that explains the same thing.
Verification without a shopfront
Service-area businesses still verify, and Google increasingly asks for a short video: showing the business name on equipment or documents, the tools of the trade, and proof you manage the business. A travel desk can show its registration documents, the booking system on screen, branded materials and the workspace. Plan the video before you start, record it in one continuous take, and keep it honest; staged or borrowed premises are exactly what the review looks for.
Common mistakes
- Showing a home address to look established, then getting verification questions you cannot answer cleanly
- Creating a second profile for each city you serve, which Google treats as duplicate listings
- Listing a virtual office to rank in a busier district
- Leaving the description vague, so customers cannot tell whether you come to them or they call you
FAQ
Will hiding my address hurt my ranking?
Hiding it does not lower ranking by itself; Google still knows where the business is based and uses that. What changes is the trust signal for customers, which is why the photos, description and reviews need to compensate.
I work from home but sometimes meet clients there. Should I show the address?
Only if customers can genuinely visit during the hours you list. Occasional meetings by appointment usually point to hiding the address and saying "meetings by appointment" in the description.
Can I list a different city from where I live?
List cities you actually serve, within reasonable distance. You can serve a city you do not live in, but you will not rank there just by listing it, and listing places you never work misleads customers.
