Meta Call Ads: When a Phone Call Beats a Lead Form

For a lot of service businesses, the best lead is the one who rings. A traveller with a date change, a patient who wants an appointment this week, a parent comparing coaching classes: these people would rather talk than type into a form, and a two-minute call usually tells you more than a form with ten fields.

Meta lets you run ads whose main button starts a phone call. They are simple to set up and easy to waste money on, because the parts that decide whether they work sit outside Ads Manager.

When call ads make sense

Call ads suit services where the buyer has questions before committing, where the job is urgent, or where the audience is older and less comfortable with forms. Travel changes, clinic bookings, home repairs and admissions counselling fit that pattern. If your offer is simple and price-led, a form or a WhatsApp chat is often cheaper per enquiry, and the Click-to-WhatsApp route covered earlier may suit you better.

The other test is staffing. A call ad only works if someone answers. If the phone is covered for four hours a day, the campaign has four useful hours a day.

Setting one up without the usual mistakes

In Ads Manager, call ads sit under the objectives that offer calls as the conversion location, and the call button is shown to people on phones. A few settings matter more than the rest:

  • Use a number that reaches a person. A shared office line that rings out at lunch quietly eats the budget.
  • Run the ads only during the hours someone answers. Use ad scheduling where your budget type allows it, or pause the campaign outside those hours.
  • Match the creative to the call. Say what the caller gets, such as talking to a person about changing a booking, rather than a slogan.
  • Show the number in the video or image as well. Some people prefer to dial it themselves later.

What Meta counts, and what you should count

Ads Manager records a call when someone taps the button. It cannot tell whether the call connected, how long it lasted or whether anyone picked up. A campaign can show a healthy cost per call while half of those calls rang out.

Count answered calls in your own phone system instead. Most cloud phone services, and many mobile plans, keep a call log with durations. A simple weekly sheet is enough: calls to the ad's number, how many were answered, how many lasted longer than a minute, and how many became a booking. If you can, give the ads their own number so these calls are not mixed with calls from your website.

Missed calls are where the money leaks

A missed call from an ad is a paid lead you will lose unless you act quickly. Set up voicemail with a short greeting that names your business, and check it several times a day. Calling back within minutes, rather than at the end of the day, usually decides whether the person is still interested.

If your team works different hours from your customers, say so in the ad and on the voicemail. Promising to be available and then missing the call does more damage than stating your real hours.

Budget and how long to test

Start small and run long enough to see real calls, typically one to two weeks at a modest daily budget. Judge the test on answered calls and bookings, never on taps. If the cost per booking works, raise the budget in steps and keep watching the answer rate as volume grows, because a busy line drops calls that a quiet one would have caught.

FAQ

Do call ads show on desktop?

The call button is built for phones, so that is where these ads do their work. People on a computer can still dial the number if you show it in the ad or on your page.

Is a call ad better than a lead form?

For urgent or complex services, calls tend to bring fewer but more serious enquiries. For simple offers, a form is often cheaper. Test both on the same audience and compare the cost per booking.

Should the ads use the same number as our website?

They can, but a separate number for the ads makes the results much clearer, because you can see exactly how many calls the ads produced and how many were answered.
